THE ARTISTS

MICHELE DE LA MENARDIERE
Through iridescent color, amorphic shape, and varying texture, Michele de la Menardiere uses an abstract language to explore the rich complexity of the visceral landscape. Without preconceived ideas, she paints spontaneously in the moment making the process of painting--a meditative exercise--equally as important as the end result.

Michele's work has been exhibited in renowned galleries across the country and has been purchased by the Hyatt and Westin Hotels. Most recently, two of her paintings were purchased for the U.S. Embassy in Burkina Faso.

LAURIE WILSON
Laurie Wilson is a photographer based in California. She started her art education at San Francisco art institute & finished her photography BA at Art Center college of design. Her work experience is often editorial portraits, documentaries, & travel stories. For this show she will be showing a group of personal images.

PABLO PARKER
Born and raise in El Salvador moved to San Francisco in mid 2000, through years of friendship with many recognized artist (specially painters), he is recently becoming more and more fascinated by the use of acrylics, he will be showing a group of experiments he has been able to hold on through his recent years of exploring on art as part of his game of perceptual conventions.

MICHAEL ROSS
Michael Ross will be showing a series of watercolors made during a trip to West Africa in the fall of 2008. After a painting residency on the coast of Benin, he traveled across the African Sahel, a vast, flat expanse of dry brush and low forest, lands occupied by shepherds and small farms and villages made of mud-brick houses and bustling, overcrowded cities. He moved overland by bus, boat, moped and camel, roughly tracing the course of the Niger River to Timbuktu, and then back to the coast in Senegal. Along the way he painted portraits of people he met -- farmers, workers, fellow travelers. A series of sepia-colored photographs from this trip will be on view at SFO Terminal 3 in the fall of 2011. DAVID MOLESKY
David Molesky was born in Washington, D.C. in 1977 and obtained his B.A. from University of California at Berkeley (1999). In 2009, he moved back to San Francisco after a 2-year apprenticeship with the kitsch painter Odd Nerdrum in Iceland, Norway, and Paris. Molesky predominantly uses oil paint to create landscapes and narratives that are timeless and archetypal. His work has been featured in numerous museum exhibitions: the Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Pasinger Fabrik, Munich, Germany; Telemarksgaleriet, Nottoden, Norway; Senson Gallery, University of California, Santa Cruz; Grand Central Art Center, Cal State, Fullerton.

GEOFF KING
Geoff has photographed political protests across the United States and in Britain since the first day of the Iraq War. In 2005 he traveled to Bosnia to document the ongoing search for missing persons in the context of the tenth anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre. REBECCA DUNLAP
Art is a means of expression for me - it represents my internal self, contrasted with an external character and is illustrated through several layers. I use color, line and texture in a variety of different ways to achieve this. Pairing blocks of opaque colors alongside translucent splashes of color often become the first layer. Bold colors are subdued by the soft, weathered hues of nature evident in the second and sometimes third layer. Organic elements such as twigs, leaves, and flowers both complement and disrupt the natural tones and hues used in my monoprints. The honest reactions of my viewers are imperative to my development as an artist and the ever-changing processes I employ. My influences include Helen Frankenthaler, Jim Dine, Mark Rothko, and Amelia Solomon, my maternal Grandmother.

New ArtWalk Unveiled Today

DCist, admittedly, was not in love with the first ArtWalk, the large installation of murals on the old convention center site at 10th St. between New York Ave. and H St., NW. The third edition of ArtWalk opened this afternoon, and while we still have many of the prior complaints about the space (Astroturf is unnecessary, and the backstops with tarps that make up the walkway are far from aesthetically pleasing), the artwork itself is much better this year, and some of it is actually very good.

The D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities decided on Emerge for this year’s theme to correspond with the impending transformation of the space (buildings and condos are scheduled to be built on the site starting next January). This is the final ArtWalk due to these changes, and it is probably the most successful one of the three, with more hits than misses. The twelve 6' x 24' murals range in media from photography to painting to screen-printing, and the majority of the artists are from the Washington metro area, while two are from Philadelphia.

Nascent Flight by Michele de la Menardiere

Highlights include Michele de la Menardiere’s Nascent Flight (pictured), a colorful work made by screen-printing and digital media, which examines humanity’s universal consciousness and meditates on the sublime. The word Gayatri, which appears more easily in the real life version, refers to the Hindu goddess of awakening, an apt symbol for emergence.

The Memory of Tomorrow, by Ira Tattelman and Thomas Drymon, is another terrific mural — the photograph of a wedding explores the body, light, time, and space, and the active quality of the image makes you feel as though you’re a part of the wedding itself.

The most clichéd mural is Emerge by Kate Kaman and Joel Erland — the pair departed from their usual style to create an image of a groundhog and insects, animals associated with various “emergences.” Their stated message for the work, “I emerge, therefore I exist,” claims to be “post-ironic” but doesn’t quite seem to make the connections the artists were intending.

ArtWalk would probably be more successful as an art exhibit with stricter parameters (maybe have fewer artists participating), so that the whole installation could have a more unified feel. It’s still not the sort of thing one might seek out if not already in the area, but it succeeds in adding some color to the boring parking lot, and perhaps a nice place to sit and eat your lunch. The murals will be on display until construction begins on the site.

Well kids, I am a very busy bee. 2008 has proven to be a year of great artistic fulfillment much as my vedic astrologer predicted. Lots of exciting opportunities and creative adventures have presented themselves and I am along for the ride...that said... at 9am this morning when i noticed that there was going to be an artomatic and that registration was TODAY I thought, oh why not? Yes I have a million other commitments but how can I say no to the greatest collaborative creative effort this city puts on every year or so?

Everyone has a different feeling about artomatic but no matter your opinions-excited or overwhelmed by the prospect of traipsing through it all-it's worth at least a visit or 2.

I vow to only put in fresh NEW paintings that I am working on AT THIS MOMENT....so come out an explore.

APRIL 11th @ 12pm: ArtWalk 2008 Unveiling

Hi Friends! On Friday, April 11th at 12pm, EMERGE, ArtWalk 2008 will be unveiled at Metro Center in Washington, DC. This large-scale art project sponsored by the DC Commission for the Arts and Humanities will consist of 12 24 Ft by 6 Ft billboards depicting 12 artist's interpretation of the theme "Emerge". I am extremely honored to be chosen as one of the artists for this year long display and very excited to see it unveiled. All are welcome to come to the opening/dedication at 12 noon on April 11th. Otherwise, stop by to see the mural at your leisure. ArtWalk is conveniantly located at 10th street between New York Avenue and H Street, just two blocks from the metro center station.

NCCF's largest fundraising event, Art & Soul, will be held on Friday, April 11th, at the Music Center at Strathmore, 5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda, Maryland. The event begins at 7:00 pm with prominent community leaders and philanthropic partners being recognized and given NCCF's Spirit Award for Humanitarian Achievement for their advocacy and exemplary support of vulnerable children, youth, and families in the Washington Metropolitan region.

At 7:00 pm, guests will begin bidding via silent auction on over 100 pieces of art selected by a jury of professional artists and curators. Patrons will also enjoy delicious hors d'oeuvres, designer cocktails and other beverages, as they make their silent bids on restaurant packages, designer jewelry, and more, all generously donated by local merchants.

Several pieces produced by talented young artists residing in NCCF's Greentree Shelter (GTS) and Greentree Adolescent Program (GAP) will make for heated bidding during the live auction segment. According to Alex, a youth from GAP, "Making things beautiful and creating art projects helps me believe that I can do things I never thought I could do. . . It encourages me to look at things in a different way. . . Ms. Mary may be coming to teach us art, but when she leaves, we have learned so much more." Mary Freedman and Randy Rosenblum volunteer every Wednesday at NCCF® to teach art class to at-risk youth - a commitment now in its 6th year.

The community is invited to join us on Friday, April 11th, at The Music Center at Strathmore for an evening of great food and fun in support of vulnerable children, and families right here in our community. The evening's entertainment will feature award winning, jazz vocalist Julia Nixon. Tickets for the event are $100 per person.

Today was a nice day :) I received a call from the Washington Book Publishers asking me if I would consider being a judge for their 2008 Book Design Awards Competition. I am so very honored! I have won many awards from them and I can not wait to switch sides so to speak :)! So yes I said-yes yes! I shall blog about the experience here in early May

For those of you who might not be ready to purchase an original work of art, I am now making limited edition prints of my work.
I am currently selling matted prints of my paintings that are 11 x 14 (Image area is 7.5 x 9.5). They are printed on archival, acid-free paper and are carefully wrapped in plastic sheeting for safe delivery. Cost of these prints is $50 + shipping cost (UPS). If you are interested, please contact me with the name of the painting you would like.

Prints are available at other sizes and without matting as well! If you are looking for something particular let me know and I'll do my best to make it happen.

This is I created at X. I enjoyed my experience design competing at "X". If you do not know about this super creative effort in DC you SHOULD. David Fogel and his crew are highly passionate about what they are doing and you can feel the positive energy bubbling over at BeBar. The music was amazing...my friend Jeremy Arn did some superb live painting and the place was packed!

The winner was the amazingly talented John Whitlock whose entire portfolio rocks!

project sponsored by the DC Commission for the Arts and Humanities. Stay tuned for the date of the unveiling!

EMERGE, ARTWALK 2008 is a thought provoking large-scale outdoor exhibit. Through artist interpretation of Emerge, the premise and goal of the exhibition is to present 12 diverse artworks with a common theme that will draw the attention of both Washington, DC residents and visitors. ArtWalk is a project of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities' downtown public art initiative, in cooperation with the Washington Convention Center. The ArtWalk features 12 display units each stretching 6 feet tall by 24 feet wide.
